From Medicine to Winemaking
Raised in Worcester, a renowned wine-producing area, Abrie initially pursued a career in medicine. However, his passion for viticulture led him to Stellenbosch University, where he completed a BSc in Viticulture and Oenology in 1997. His journey into winemaking began at Swartland Winery, where he worked with large volumes of Pinotage. This experience laid the foundation for his future endeavors.
A Legacy at Kanonkop
In 2002, Abrie joined Kanonkop Estate, a prestigious winery in Stellenbosch, as winemaker. Under his stewardship, Kanonkop achieved remarkable success, earning numerous accolades, including the International Wine and Spirit Competition’s International Winemaker of the Year award in 2008, 2015, and 2017. In 2019, he received the Outstanding Wine Producer Trophy, a testament to his consistent excellence.
The Birth of Beeslaar Wines
In 2011, alongside his wife Jeanne, Abrie established Beeslaar Wines, focusing on producing high-quality Pinotage. The brand was born out of a deep appreciation for this uniquely South African varietal, aiming to showcase its potential on the global stage.

The Chardonnay is fermented using whole bunches, with 80% aged in 225L barrels (20% new) and the remainder in ceramic pots, all over a 12-month period.
The Sacrament 2022
In 2022, Abrie introduced The Sacrament, a Bordeaux-style red blend that marks a significant addition to the Beeslaar portfolio. Comprising 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, and 20% Cabernet Franc, this wine is a tribute to the sacred interplay of nature’s gifts, unaltered and uncreated by human hands. The name reflects gratitude for the divine elements that make great wine possible.

- Aroma: An inviting blend of cassis, ripe red berries, dark chocolate, and tobacco, complemented by subtle hints of graphite and delicate herbs.
- Palate: Bold and intricately layered, with a well-structured yet harmonious balance of fruit and oak, leading to a rich, dry finish that is distinctly Beeslaar in character.
- Finish: A wine that possesses the ability to age for exceptional lengths of time, exhibiting complexity and elegance.
The Sacrament spent 19 months in 100% new French oak barrels and underwent two rackings to achieve balance and structure. It is a wine that reflects Abrie’s commitment to producing wines of exceptional quality and character.
