This international exposure broadened his understanding of global viticultural practices and deepened his appreciation for site-specific winemaking.Upon his return to South Africa, Xander began his winemaking journey at Highlands Road Estate in Elgin. He then spent four vintages as Assistant Winemaker at La Vierge in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, where he refined his approach to cool-climate varietals. In 2017, he rejoined Villiera Wines as the Cap Classique Winemaker, a position he held until 2023. During his tenure, he was instrumental in elevating the winery’s sparkling wine program, which has garnered both local and international acclaim. Salt Rock Wines In 2023, Xander founded Salt Rock Wines in Stellenbosch with Rudolph Steenkamp. The brand was born from a shared vision: to create authentic, terroir-driven wines that celebrate South Africa’s diverse vineyard regions and microclimates. Salt Rock Wines focuses on elegant, site-expressive varietals, including Chenin Blanc, Cinsault and Pinot Noir, crafted to attract both discerning connoisseurs and new wine enthusiasts.

Career Highlights and Recognition

  • Stand Alone Pinot Noir (2014): Xander's first Pinot Noir, inspired by a lone tree on his family farm in Stanford. The 2020 vintage received a 4-star rating in Platter's Wine Guide.
  • Diners Club Winemaker of the Year Finalist (2020): Nominated for his Tradition Brut NV Cap Classique, produced at Villiera Wines.
  • Concours Mondial du Sauvignon (2023): Winner of the Tonnellerie Sylvain Trophy for the 2022 Villiera Bush Vine Sauvignon Blanc.
